Cardinal Burke is the Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, the highest judicial authority in the Church. Before moving to Rome in 2008, he served as Archbishop of St. Louis and Bishop of La Crosse. Cardinal Burke was born in Richland Center, Wisconsin, the youngest of the six children of Thomas and Marie Burke, on June 30, 1948. Pope Paul VI ordained Burke to the priesthood on June 29, 1975, at Saint Peter's Basilica. He holds a Master of Arts in Theology, a Licentiate in Canon Law, a Diploma in Latin Letters and Doctorate in Canon Law, all from Rome’s Pontifical Gregorian University. During his tenure in Saint Louis, Archbishop Burke was awarded two honorary doctorates in humane letters, one from Ave Maria University and the other from Christendom College.

In a letter to us, His Eminence writes:

Be assured of my full support of the work of The Catholic Artists Society, and also of my prayers for God's abundant blessings upon you and all the members and upon the Society itself.

I ask a continued remembrance in your prayers.

Invoking God's blessing upon you, ...and your art, while confiding your intentions to the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Saint Joseph, Saint Luke the Evangelist and Blessed Fra Angelico, I remain

Yours devotedly in the Sacred Heart of Jesus,

Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke
Prefect, Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura

Cardinal Burke's patronage is a tremendous blessing for the Society, and we give thanks to God for it. Please keep His Eminence in your prayers. Our Lady of Guadalupe, Saint Joseph, Saint Luke the Evangelist and Blessed Fra Angelico, pray for us.

CAS: Highlights from the Lenten Evening of Recollection

Catholic Artists Society members gathered at the beautiful Church of St. Vincent de Paul on Thursday, March 1st, for a very fruitful Lenten Evening of Recollection. After Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, and a rendition of O Salutaris Hostia, Fr. Gerald Murray provided an inspiring meditation. Making reference to the writings of Romano Guardini and Pope Benedict XVI, Fr. Murray pointed out the artist's responsibility to God and to his fellow man.

Here is a recording of Father's meditation:

The meditation was followed by silent adoration, while Frs. Murray and Nicholas Callaghan heard confessions. Then, Benediction.

Afterwards, members gathered for a wine and cheese in the church basement. Special thanks to our host, Fr. Gerald Murray, and to Fr. Nicholas Callagan, and to all the members, patrons and friends whose generous support made the evening possible.

We look forward to seeing you at the next event!

The Church of St. Vincent de Paul is an architectural gem, with a 19th century interior designed in the classical style by Henry Englebert, and a facade added by Anthony Depace in 1939. The interior boasts many beautiful works of art, including 10 Tiffany stained-glass windows. The church has a long connection with the city's Francophone community, and was the venue for the 1952 marriage of Edith Piaf to Jacques Pills, in which Marlene Dietrich acted as matron of honor. We look forward to seeing you there.

CAS: Highlights from the Advent Evening of Recollection

Stuart Chessman of the Society of St. Hugh of Cluny reports on the Catholic Artists Society's Advent Evening of Recollection...

+ + +

Img_4516

An evening of recollection, with benediction and the opportunity of confession sponsored by the Catholic Artists Society – all in the magnificent surroundings of Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral (now a basilica). It was followed by a most pleasant reception in the rectory of the church – in the very room where Archbishop McCloskey received his cardinal’s hat – he was the first American Cardinal.

Img_4520

An inspiring meditation, specifically addressed to the artistic community, was given by Fr.Jonathan Morris. He referred to Pope Benedict’s comments on the special role of the artist. Through the “production” of art the artist in a sense shares in the ministry of the church; he leads people to the same goal as the clergy seek to do.

Img_4521

Second, the artist’s experience of beauty contributes to the spiritual development of the artist himself. His talent is not separate from his spiritual life but is a means by which the Holy Spirit seeks to lead him to salvation.

Img_4523

The experience of beauty does not remove us from reality but deepens our encounter with it. This is why the artist often has a higher “velocity” of spiritual life. The temptation to mediocrity, however, is a threat to us all but expecially to the artist. For the devil wants nothing more than that a man should be only a “good guy.”

Many thanks to the pastor of St. Patrick’s, Monsignor Donald Sakano, for hosting this special evening.
